Here's how it work:
Enrollment: Authorized users have their fingerprints scanned and stored as digital templates in a secure database. This enrollment process typically happens during system setup or when granting access to a new individual.
Fingerprint Capture: When someone seeks access, they place their finger on the scanner's surface.
Image Processing: The scanner captures an image of the fingerprint (using capacitive, optical, or ultrasonic technology as described previously).
Template Extraction: The scanner extracts a digital representation (template) of the captured fingerprint data, focusing on the unique ridges and valleys.
Matching the Database: This extracted template is then compared against the pre-enrolled fingerprint templates stored in the access control system's database.
Granting or Denying Access:
Match Success: If the comparison algorithm finds a sufficient match between the captured template and a stored template, access is granted. This might involve unlocking a door, gate, or triggering other access control mechanisms.
Match Failure: If there's no matching template or the match quality falls below a certain threshold, access is denied. An alarm might be triggered, or an alternative authentication method might be required.

Convenience: Fingerprint scanners offer a faster and more natural way to unlock device compared to PINs or passwords.
Enhanced Security: Fingerprints are much harder to forge than PINs or passwords, making unauthorized access more difficult.
Limitations:
Finger Quality: Users having bad quality fingers sometimes get issues while doing authentication. In such cases combination of PIN with fingers is much useful to try out.
Sensor Quality: The accuracy of fingerprint scanners can depend on the sensor quality and environmental factors like wet fingers.
